 April Meeting

If you have ever had that sinking feeling when the dear, beloved” Vegetarian” friends ring up and invite themselves round for dinner, then have no fear. Polly Smith has the answer.

Last Wednesday evening, the Bettws WI were thoroughly entertained by Polly Smith. She did a demonstration of vegetarian cooking with a variety of dishes to taste. Polly, who has been a vegetarian for many years, explained the different types of vegetarian diets, and showed us how easy it is to rustle up a delicious meal using tofu. She had worked very hard preparing canapés of mushroom pate and hummus. The ladies were then eager to try the selection of main dishes Polly had cooked. These included a wonderful Butternut Squash Casserole, a very tasty Cashew Nut and Mushroom Roast, a delicious Spinach and Potato tart and a Sweet and Sour Vegetable stir fry with tofu.

Not only had Polly written up her recipes for us to take home, she had been in contact with various vegetarian food companies and they had sent some tasty selections of food and recipe cards for everyone to have too. The evening was a great success and the ladies went home after eating “an elegant sufficiency”. The dishes were lovely. I’m sure everyone has some tasty ideas for vegetarian dishes either as a main course or, for the people who can’t manage without the meat, as an accompanying side dish. I’m sure everyone is with me when I say Thank you to Polly for her hard work and preparation for such an entertaining evening.

 February Meeting

Fifteen hardy souls braved the arctic conditions and attended the February meeting to hear a talk on Climate Change. The speaker for the evening was Dave Tomlinson ably assisted by Dennis Twist. Dennis gave an illustrated description of the changes in our climate and supported his talk with slides of statistics.

Dave then followed by giving members information on how they as individuals could help save energy in their own houses. He gave details of a new service being offered in the area by the Lightfoot Energy Service, that of thermal imaging. This service which costs £50 per household will identify where you are losing energy and suggest solutions to rectify the problem.

They had also recently received a grant to undertake energy services in public buildings, with a view to advising on helping conserve energy.. As members were mostly sitting still with their outer clothing on it was suggested that the Bettws Hall committee should perhaps take advantage of this service. A vote of thanks was given by Sheila Davies.

The speaker for the March meeting on the 14th is local man David Evans who will be giving a talk entitled “History in post cards.” .

Visitors will be made most welcome and further information on the forthcoming years programme details can be obtained from the President Lynne Reynolds 01588 640725 or Debbie Pagett on 01588 640515
